Comment on Elementary Education: Flexibility in Learning with Homeschooling for Grades K-5 by Jessica Parnell

Lynn » I would start by stepping back and evaluating your reason for homeschooling again. Write that down and post it somewhere as a reminder to yourself. It is far too easy to become a slave to your curriculum and lose sight of your "Why?" But a constant reminder -- even on your bathroom mirror so it kicks off your day every day -- is a great way to stay focused.
Then, look at your program. If you are finding that it is consuming far more time than it should and pulling you from your reason for homeschooling, then I would definitely consider a change. You want a curriculum that makes it enjoyable for all of you. One that takes into account the strengths and interests of each child and allows all of you to have fun while also learning and growing.
However, I realize you also need a plan to complete this year. From the sound of your question, you are enrolled in their academy. If so, start there. Let them know you need some flexibility on the due dates. Then, be flexible with each lesson. If your daughter has mastered the skills, let her complete select practice questions. And be sure to look at the extras and determine whether they are needed or not. I am not certain how much flexibility is built into the Abeka program, but with Bridgeway Academy, parents have a wide selection of ideas to use with their kids and are able to pick and choose what fits. Hopefully, Abeka will work with you in that way as well.
As for kindergarten, academics should take no more than 2 hours per day (and that is on a full day). If you are consistently finding that it is consuming too much of your day, scale back. Pick and choose, focus on the reading and enjoy your time with your precious children.
Bottom line is, homeschooling needs to have an element of fun for all of you. Otherwise, you will quickly burn out and the kids will not enjoy all of the benefits that homeschooling has to offer.

I have been homeschooling my girl since kindergarten she's in 3rd grade now. We have been using abeka and are feeling stressed! If we don't follow daily work then we will be behind for the tests. I'm not sure what to do? Maybe we should try something different next year. I also have a boy that started kindergarten this year. It seems like we don't have time for anything fun..... Any suggestions? Thank you

I have a fifth grader who is struggling so we pulled her from school half way through fourth grade. Our flexibility has been to go back to the basics. I got rid of her fourth grade math and English textbooks and just went back to building her reading skills and the basic math operations. It is going slower than I hoped but she is doing much better! It is nice not to have to push her through lessons she really doesn't understand and instead give her what she needs in order to do well.

Sarah - I love reading about your adventures! What a gift this year is for you and your sisters. I know you don't know me, but I know your mom. I used to babysit for her and her siblings when her dad was our pastor in Denville, NJ.
